Alma Adams becomes latest NC lawmaker — and black caucus member — to endorse Biden
U.S. Rep. Alma Adams has endorsed Democrat Joe Biden, becoming the second North Carolina lawmaker and latest member of the Congressional Black Caucus to back the former vice president.
“He’s the best-equipped candidate to work with Congress to pass a progressive agenda that includes historic investments in affordable housing, healthcare and higher education,” Adams said in a statement. “I’m endorsing Joe not only because he will beat Donald Trump, but also because he is ready to face the challenges of the presidency at the drop of a hat.”
The Charlotte Democrat’s endorsement follows that of Rep. G.K. Butterfield, a former chairman of the black caucus. They’re among 16 caucus members to announce their support for Biden.
The endorsements underscore Biden’s support among African Americans in the state whose primary comes on March 3, Super Tuesday.
Public Policy Polling recently found Biden with support from 47% of likely African American Democratic primary voters. Black voters make up almost half of the state’s registered Democrats.
The same poll found Biden leading all Democratic candidates with 31% in North Carolina.
The results are similar to Biden’s standing in South Carolina, which holds its primary Feb. 29. A Fox News poll this month showed Biden with the support of 43% of black voters. Bernie Sanders was second with 16% support among black voters.
The Biden campaign has named party operative Travis Brimm as its state director. He was an adviser to former 9th District Congressional candidate Dan McCready.
