U.S. Sen. Tom Cotton of Arkansas endorsed Kent Keirsey Tuesday to represent North Carolina’s 13th Congressional District.

“Kent Keirsey is the type of leader that we need in Congress,” Cotton said in a written statement. “Kent knows what it means to serve, and he knows how to get things done.”

Keirsey, 40, is one of eight people running for the Republican nomination on May 17 to represent North Carolina’s only swing district.

He is a businessman and decorated combat veteran who received a Bronze Star for his leadership through a 12-month deployment in a region of Iraq, south of Baghdad, known for heavy combat.

“Kent is a combat veteran who bravely led soldiers in Iraq’s Triangle of Death,” Cotton said. “And he is a business leader who built several companies from the ground up. We need Kent in Congress as we fight to secure our border, end (President Joe) Biden’s inflation, and get our economy back on track.”

Like Keirsey, Cotton is a decorated veteran, and represented Arkansas’ 4th Congressional District.

“It is a privilege to receive the endorsement of Sen. Cotton who is on the front lines in Washington every day fighting for American families and against Biden’s socialist agenda,” Keirsey said. “I look forward to joining Senator Cotton next year with a Republican majority that will focus on putting America First.”

Election details

Among Keirsey’s seven opponents in the primary are former U.S. Rep. Renee Ellmers and Kelly Daughtry, the daughter of former state Rep. Leo Daughtry, a prominent Republican.

He will also face political newcomer Bo Hines, who received the endorsement of former President Donald Trump and has been likened to controversial U.S. Rep. Madison Cawthorn.

The Republican nominee will face the winner of the Democratic primary, which includes five candidates, notably state Sen. Wiley Nickel and former state Sen. Sam Searcy.
