Community organizer Eliazar Posada ran with a strong lead in voting results Tuesday to win a seat on the Carrboro Town Council in a specially called election.

With all eight Carrboro precincts reporting election day results, Posada had 74.44% of the unofficial total, followed by his opponent Aja Kelleher, who had 24.62% of the vote.

Posada will serve the remainder of former council member Damon Seils’ term, which ends in 2023. Seils was elected mayor in November, leaving a vacancy on the six-member council.

Posada is a longtime activist, who currently serves on the town’s Planning Board and is a member of the local and state Democratic Party executive committees. He most recently started a consulting company that works with grassroots activists and nonprofit groups to organize and take action.

Kelleher is a Fidelity Investments consultant and a member of the town’s Storm Water Advisory Commission. She ran an unsuccessful campaign for a council seat in the November election.
