Voter Guide

Here are the candidates on your NC ballot for governor, and what to know about them

North Carolina voters will choose a new governor on Election Day, Nov. 5. As part of our sweeping Voter Guide for the 2024 election, here’s what to know about the candidates.

There is no incumbent on the ballot. Governors are limited to two consecutive terms, and incumbent Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper is finishing out his second term.

There are no women candidates for governor.

The two major party candidates are already statewide elected officials. Democratic nominee Josh Stein is the attorney general, finishing his second term. Republican nominee Mark Robinson is lieutenant governor, in his first term.

They’re not the only options on your ballot. There are three third party candidates from the Green, Constitution and Libertarian parties: Michael Wayne Turner, Vinny Smith and Mike Ross, respectively.

If Robinson or Smith wins, they would be the state’s first Black governor. If Stein wins, he would be the state’s first Jewish governor.

We sent candidate questionnaires to all the gubernatorial candidates, asking them the same questions about their vision for North Carolina, the job and themselves. Robinson and Ross did not respond.
