State House Democrats are using the UNC Board of Governors’ presidential hire to raise money.
Margaret Spellings is president of the George W. Bush Presidential Center and was his education secretary. The Board of Governors hired her Friday, and she’ll become UNC system president next year.
Spellings has fans among Democrats, but it looks like state House Democrats aren’t among them.
A fund raising email from state Rep. Graig Meyer of Chapel Hill has the subject line “UNC Left Behind.” Spellings pushed the federal education law No Child Left Behind while in Washington.

“Hiring a political operator rather than a true educator is another example of Republican leadership gone wrong,” the email says.
It criticizes Spellings for sitting on the board of the parent company of the for-profit University of Phoenix, which is under federal investigation. Spellings was on the board from 2012-13.
It also takes a shot at her $775,000 a year salary, $35,000 relocation allowance, and other perks.
