State Rep. Chris Whitmire, a two-term Republican from Transylvania County in the mountains, is the latest legislator to announce he won’t seek reelection.
Whitmire is a military officer, pilot and real-estate agent who chairs the House Homeland Security, Military and Veterans Affairs Committee.
According to The Transylvania Times, Whitmire has “accepted a new civilian employment position directly related to his military experience that he couldn’t pass up.” His announcement doesn’t offer further details about the new job, but he said he’ll be serving out his current term through next year.
Republican Cody Henson has announced he’ll run for Whitmire’s seat, which includes Transylvania and parts of Henderson and Polk counties along the South Carolina border.
