The reason a Publix store brand dessert got recalled in Florida, 7 other states

A packaging mistake that can create a “serious or life-threatening” situation for shoppers not paying attention caused a recall of Publix brand coffee cakes this week.

J. Skinner Baking, which makes the coffee cakes for Publix, recalled lot No. 5309 of Publix Maple Walnut Coffee Cake because the ingredient label was for Publix Raspberry Coffee Cake. The ingredients label for the latter doesn’t include walnuts.

Though the label does say “processed on equipment that also processes almonds, pecans and walnuts” and there’s a clear lid through which shoppers can see this is Maple Walnut Coffee Cake and not Raspberry Coffee Cake, neither Skinner nor Publix want to take a chance on being associated with a food allergy tragedy.

“The product may represent a serious or life-threatening health risk to people with a walnut allergy if they consume the impacted product,” said the recall statement posted on Publix’s website.

The notice says a store employee, “observed the visible walnuts on top of the product and noticed that the product had a Raspberry Coffee Cake label instead of a Maple Walnut Coffee Cake label.”
