Take a coat! Temperatures to plunge for New Year’s Eve celebrations, NC forecast says
If you’re planning to go out for New Year’s Eve celebrations in North Carolina, you may want to take a coat.
After days of unusually warm weather in the state, temperatures are expected to plummet early in the week, according to the National Weather Service.
Highs across the state are expected to be in the mid 60s to low 70s on Sunday, with lows in the 60s across most the state and in the high 40s to low 50s in the mountains, according to the NWS.
In Raleigh, the expected high is 65 on Sunday, which is significantly warmer than the normal high for Dec. 29, which is about 50 degrees, the National Service’s Raleigh Office says. In Charlotte, the expected high is 68 degrees, which is also significantly higher than the area’s normal high of about 50 degrees, the NWS says.
But those temperatures should drop in time to ring in the new year.
By Tuesday, lows will be in the low-to-mid 30s across the state with some areas near the coast seeing lows in the upper 30s to low 40s, the NWS says. Highs will be mostly in the mid-to-upper 50s.
Before the temperatures drop, the North Carolina mountains could see some bad weather.
Thunderstorms are possible in the area late Sunday and early Monday, along with “heavy downpours,” strong winds and occasional lightning, the NWS says.
The Charlotte area is likely to see some bad weather as well, with a 90 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms Sunday night and rain likely until about 9 a.m. Monday, McClatchy News reported.
South Carolina
Temperatures in South Carolina are also expected to plummet in time for New Year’s Eve celebrations.
Highs on Sunday are expected to be mostly in the mid 70s across the state, according to the National Weather Service, with lows in mid 60s in most areas.
But those lows should drop to the mid-to-upper 30s in most areas of the state by Tuesday, the NWS says. Highs will be mostly in the low 60s and in the mid 50s in some areas.
In Columbia, temperatures could drop to near freezing overnight on New Year’s Eve, with a low of 35 degrees, McClatchy News reported.
