Barack Obama includes North Carolina artists on his favorite music of 2019 list
Five North Carolina artists made Barack Obama’s list of his favorite music of 2019.
The former president tweeted the list of his favorite songs of the year on Monday, which included music from a variety of genres and songs by two North Carolina rappers.
The songs “Middle Child” by J. Cole, “Suge” by DaBaby and “Raleighwood Hills” by Lesthegenius featuring Sonny Miles and Jaxson Free all made the list.
All three artists on the “Raleighwood Hills” track are from Raleigh.
“Middle Child” reached No. 4 on the Billboard “Hot 100” in February, according to Billboard.
Rapper J. Cole, who grew up in Fayetteville, announced in December that his second annual Dreamville Festival will be held in Dix Park in Raleigh on April 4, 2020, The News & Observer reported.
The first festival attracted 40,000 people, according to the News & Observer.
“Suge” by DaBaby reached No. 3 on the Billboard “Hot 100” in July, according to Billboard.
Charlotte rapper DaBaby, whose legal name is Jonathan Kirk, recently was taken into custody in Charlotte after police say they found marijuana in his car during his concert at the Bojangles’ Coliseum, McClatchy News reported.
Before the concert, Kirk had given Christmas presents to 200 children in the Charlotte area. The incident sparked controversy and an internal investigation into whether officers followed policies, McClatchy News reported.
Also included on Obama’s list were “Juice” by Lizzo, “Hello Sunshine” by Bruce Springsteen and “Old Town Road (Remix)“ by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus among others.
“If you’re looking for something to keep you company on a long drive or help you turn up a workout, I hope there’s a track or two in here that does the trick,” Obama tweeted along with the list.
