Burglar tries to steal guns from home - but his getaway car needed a tow, NC cops say
A man attempting to steal guns from a North Carolina home didn’t make it very far, police say.
Raevon Smith, 24, asked an acquaintance on Monday to drive him to the home in Snow Camp, where he said his friends lived, Byron Tucker, spokesperson for the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office, told McClatchy News.
The driver told police he didn’t know what Smith was up to and that while Smith was around the back of the house, he tried to turn the car around in the driveway, Tucker said.
But his car got stuck and he ended up having to call a tow truck, according to Tucker.
Meanwhile, a neighbor was suspicious because no one had lived in the house for a while and called police to report that a car was being stolen, Tucker said.
When deputies got there, they determined the car was not being stolen, according to a release from the Alamance County Sheriff’s Office.
They also found Smith trying to take multiple guns from the home, the release says.
Officers believe he was aware that no one was living in the house but knew there were still weapons inside, Tucker said.
The homeowners told police they know Smith but that he is not allowed on their property and doesn’t have access to their home, according to Tucker.
Smith was arrested and charged with breaking and entering with intent to commit larceny and resist, delay and obstruct, the Sheriff’s Office says.
He was also wanted on additional charges in Wake and Durham counties and is being held at the Alamance County Jail on a $36,000 bond, the release says.
The driver of the car was not charged, Tucker says.
