Watch a North Carolina shelter dog compete in the puppy bowl on Super Bowl Sunday

A North Carolina pup is making her debut on national television as part of the “world’s cutest sporting event.”

Reba, an American Staffordshire Terrier at the Animal Protection Society of Caswell County, is one of 96 puppies participating in Animal Planet’s Puppy Bowl XVI, which airs at 3 p.m. on Super Bowl Sunday, the shelter says.

She and her foster mom recently made the trip to New York City for filming, the shelter wrote on Facebook.

But Reba seemed more interested in napping, the shelter says, and she didn’t get a lot of “field time.”

Her disinterest in fame landed her a spot on the competition’s second string instead of in the starting lineup, the shelter said in the release.

Still, “fun was had by all,” the shelter said.

The puppy bowl is a competition and “adoption extravaganza,” according to Animal Planet. In the past, all of the puppies and kittens that have participated have found homes.

“Animal Planet continues this tradition this year with a new set of adorable animals that are ready to tumble and fumble into their new homes across the nation,” Animal Planet says.

Reba was born in June and surrendered to animal control in Yanceyville in August, the shelter says. She was then brought to Animal Protection Society of Caswell County along with her seven siblings.

The litter of puppies was rescued by Bonnie’s Animal Rescue Kingdom, which helps make sure more animals can be taken in by the shelter as others are adopted, the shelter says.

This year is the biggest puppy bowl yet, according to Animal Planet.

Tucker, Reba’s brother, is excited to see her on TV soon, “if he doesn’t sleep through it,” the shelter says.
