1-year-old overdosing on heroin saved by two rounds of Narcan, North Carolina cops say

A North Carolina man is charged after police say his 1-year-old son overdosed on heroin last month.

Deputies were called to a home in Roseboro on Jan. 1 about a 1-year-old who wasn’t breathing, the Cumberland County Sheriff’s Office said Monday in a news release.

First responders administered CPR,but he baby was still struggling to breathe and his pupils were “constricted to pin points,” the sheriff’s office said.

So they gave the child two rounds of Narcan, which can reverse an opioid overdose, officials said.

The heroin was left within the baby’s reach, WTVD reported.

When detectives searched the home, they found three plastic bags “containing white residue” that were all “easily accessible” to the 1-year-old, the sheriff’s office said.

The child’s father, 26-year-old Luis Castellon, was arrested Friday and charged with felony child abuse, officials said. He was taken to the Cumberland County Detention Center and given a $25,000 unsecured bond.

The 1-year-old had “various internal health problems” resulting from the overdose, officials told WTVD.

Expanding access to naloxone, or Narcan, is crucial for preventing overdose deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
