Chef heading to job interview stops for North Carolina lottery tickets — and wins big

A North Carolina chef’s stop on his way to a job interview paid off big time.

Fredd Jordan, a “semi-retired” chef, was on his way to a job interview when he stopped at a convenience store in Smithfield and bought scratch-off lottery tickets, according to a Monday release from the North Carolina Education Lottery.

One of the tickets, a $5 Emerald Green 8’s, ended up winning him $200,000, the release says.

“I was happy,” Jordan told lottery officials. “Couldn’t believe it.”

Jordan claimed his prize at the lottery headquarters in Raleigh last week and ended up taking home $141,501 after taxes, according to the release.

He told lottery officials he plans to invest most of his winnings but might take a trip to see his family in California.

His win was the last of four top prizes in the Emerald Green 8’s game, which started in March, the release says. Lottery officials will now work to end the game.
