Man in stolen police car drags officer, hits EMS worker, plows into cars, NC cops say
A man is accused of dragging an officer and hitting an EMS worker in a stolen cop car, North Carolina police say.
The Fayetteville Police Department and EMS were responding to a “medical call” on Fordham Drive just before 8 a.m. Sunday when a man who was “non-cooperative and agitated” got into the driver’s seat of a police car, according to a release from the police department.
Officers tried to get the man out of the car, but he was able to put it in drive and start moving.
He dragged one of the officers — who was eventually thrown from the car — then hit an EMS worker, according to police.
The man then took off in the police car and a chase started, during which police say he rammed several other cars.
He drove into Sampson County and N.C. Highway Patrol took over the chase before the suspect crashed into a ditch in Autryville, according to the release.
The man, whose name had not been released as of Sunday afternoon, was taken to Cape Fear Valley Medical Center and is expected to face multiple charges, police say.
Autryville is about 14 miles east of Fayetteville.
The officer was also taken to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, and the EMS worker who was hit suffered minor injuries, the release says.
Anyone with security camera footage in the areas of Fordham Drive, Dartmouth Drive and Purdue Drive are asked to call 911 so it can be reviewed. Additionally, anyone involved in a crash with a marked police vehicle should call 911 to report it, the release says.
Those with information regarding the investigation are asked to call Detective D. Gousby with the Fayetteville Police Department at 910-322-1084 or to call Fayetteville/Cumberland County Crimestoppers at 910-483-8477.
