Parents and child who went missing near Blue Ridge Parkway found safe, NC officials say

A family who went missing near the Blue Ridge Parkway in North Carolina has been found safe, officials say.

A search was underway after a mom, dad and child didn’t come back from their hike on the Art Loeb Trail on Monday, WHNS and other news outlets reported.

Crews at about 9 a.m. on Tuesday continued their search, setting up at Mile Marker 420, Haywood County officials told WLOS.

The area is near Graveyard Fields and Black Balsam Knob, a scenic summit roughly 30 miles southwest of Asheville, according to romanticasheville.com.

Officials as of about 10:30 a.m. Tuesday thought the hikers were in the Shining Rock Wilderness Area, WYFF reported. The area has unmarked trails, and crews didn’t think the family had equipment for the foggy and rainy conditions, according to WHNS.

The family was found at about noon Tuesday, with only minor injuries, according to WYFF.

Haywood County Emergency Management didn’t immediately respond to McClatchy News’ request for information on Tuesday morning.
