Shootout in Charlotte neighborhood wounds 3: ‘Multiple people were shooting,’ cops say

Three people were hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a shootout erupted late Wednesday in the middle of a west Charlotte neighborhood, Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police report.

Identities and conditions of the three wounded males have not been released. All three had non-life threatening injuries, police said.

The shootings occurred around 10 p.m. in the 3400 block of Meredith Ave., north of Wilkinson Boulevard, CMPD said in a press release.

Multiple 911 calls over a 20-minute span reported wounded people at two different sites, bullets hitting vehicles and homes being fired into, the release says.

One of the wounded males was found at a Family Dollar store on Wilkinson Boulevard, and the other two showed up at a hospital, police said. It’s not yet known how they got to the hospital, police said.

“The shooting actually took place in the driveway of a residence located in the 3400 block of Meredith Ave. Based upon the evidence, it appears that multiple people were shooting, at least one in the driveway and the other was in the roadway, probably in a vehicle,” CMPD said in the release.

“Two vehicles appear to have left this location. The first vehicle wrecked down the street a few blocks away, on Meredith. The evidence indicates that it was shot into. The male occupant ran from that vehicle to the Family Dollar. It appears that this victim contacted a third party who then called 911.”

A second vehicle involved in the incident was found abandoned near the intersection of Freedom Drive at Allegheny Street, police said. It had been struck by gunfire, officials said.

“Two subjects, believed to have been in that vehicle, were seen nearby, one has been detained and the second fled on foot and has not been located.”

The identity of the detained person has not been released.

At least two homes on Meredith Street were hit by stray bullets, but the people inside were not hurt, police said.
