Street ‘lined with Mexican flags’ after family threatened for flying one, NC woman says
Neighbors are flying Mexican flags in support of a North Carolina family that says it received a threatening note for displaying one.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office said it is investigating after Jessica Zambrano reported an anonymous threatening note was delivered to her house near Wilmington.
Zambrano on Wednesday posted a photo on Facebook of the letter and said her family has a Mexican flag displayed on their front porch.
Flying a Mexican flag “means war,” the anonymous note read, according to the Facebook post. “The 2nd Amendment gives the the right AND DUTY (with guns) to rid my country of people like you and your family.”
The note went on to say the family should remove the flag “or feel my wrath.” The full note contained graphic language.
Zambrano said the Mexican flag honors the heritage of her husband, WECT reported.
“My husband is from Mexico. Though he is also a US citizen, that does not erase where he came from,” she wrote in her Facebook post.
Days after the family reported receiving the letter, Zambrano said people in the community showed their support.
“My street was lined with Mexican flags,” she wrote on Facebook. “Neighbors standing in solidarity, letting this person know that their beliefs are not welcome here.”
Others took to social media to back the family.
“I am appalled that a neighbor terrorized you like that,” one person commented on Zambrano’s post. “Sending love and support-- the only antidote to this sort of vile behavior.”
But other social media users doubted whether the family received a letter.
The New Hanover County Sheriff’s Office has contacted the FBI, spokesperson Lt. Jerry Brewer told McClatchy News on Friday.
