This bakery sells cupcakes with a kick — and its treats were named the best in NC
A bakery near the coast is serving up the best cupcakes in North Carolina, a new report finds.
The Peppered Cupcake in Wilmington is the top-ranking spot in the state to eat cupcakes, the restaurant review website Yelp said Thursday, Dec. 9.
The business calls itself “a gourmet cupcakery,” with two locations that offer flavors such as coconut cream, apple crisp and peach and lavender cobbler.
“One of the most distinct differences with our desserts is that we do not ‘finish’ your frosted cupcake until you order,” The Peppered Cupcake said on its website. “This gives us another dimension to the cupcake concept by incorporating fresh whipped creams, toasted nuts, ganache, fresh fruit, etc.”
If you’re in for more of a kick, The Peppered Cupcake said it also lives up to its name as treats with habaneros, jalapeños and other spicy ingredients have made it onto the menu.
“If you’ve ever had pepper jelly served on top of cream cheese served with crackers, then you see there are endless flavor combinations for our Peppered preserves,” the bakery said on its website. “These (spicy) preserves are dolloped in the middle of our lightly whipped cream cheese buttercream finished with fresh cracked pepper.”
While not every customer tried out the savory treats, some on Yelp described sinking their teeth into cupcakes that were both light and flavorful, helping the business earn a 5-star rating.
To determine the best cupcakes in North Carolina, Yelp said it “identified businesses in the cupcakes category, then ranked those businesses using a number of factors including the total volume and ratings of reviews.”
The Peppered Cupcake is no stranger to earning statewide recognition.
In February, the shop was named Yelp’s top place to get desserts in the state. The website said it also studied rankings and reviews to create that list, McClatchy News reported.
