A North Carolina man followed his gut feeling and bought a lottery ticket, netting him $100,000, state lottery officials said.

Nawaz Haque of Albemarle said the Millionaire Maker scratch-off “was just calling to me” when he stopped by Andy’s Mart convenience store in Richfield, according to a news release. The store was a popular hangout in high school, Haque said, and he wanted to see if anyone he knew was still working there.

Though he doesn’t buy scratch-offs often, Haque said he decided to purchase the $30 ticket after a talk with the clerk.

“I asked him what number it was and he said three,” he recalled, according to the release. “Three is my lucky number so I bought it.”

Haque soon found himself jumping for joy after scratching off his ticket in the store.

“It was just pure adrenaline at that point,” he said of the moment he realized he won.

Haque collected his winnings on May 6, taking home about $71,000 after taxes, lottery officials said. He said he plans to invest a portion of the money.

Albemarle is in Stanly County, about 40 miles from Charlotte.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
