A North Carolina construction worker scored a jackpot prize — and now plans to spoil his mom.

“I want to buy my mom a new car,” Kirk Nyberg Jr. said Aug. 19 in a news release. “Probably a van for her grandkids.”

Nyberg is considering the generous gesture after he bought a lottery ticket worth $250,000. Officials said he had the stroke of luck after spending a day working outside.

Nyberg made a stop for cigarettes in Vanceboro, near New Bern and roughly 115 miles southeast of Raleigh. While at a Speedway store, he spent an extra $5 to play the Mega Bucks Limited Edition game, according to the N.C. Education Lottery.

It turns out, Nyberg’s scratch-off ticket was worth much more — he kept $177,526 after taxes.

“It’s a game changer for me,” Nyberg, a Craven County resident, said in the news release.

It’s not the first time someone has wanted to share after a big lottery win.

In July, officials said a North Carolina man kept a promise to split his prize money with a longtime friend.

And in South Carolina, a recent jackpot winner expressed interest in helping his mom, McClatchy News reported.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
