Rear-end crash pushes car into school bus with 33 kids on board, NC video shows
A crash sent a car slamming into a school bus with 33 children on board, North Carolina officials said.
Video posted online shows two children running on a driveway toward a stopped school bus. A car going in the opposite direction stopped for the bus before it was rear-ended, causing it to hit the front of the bus early Wednesday, Nov. 2, according to the Public Schools of Robeson County.
The impact left the front end of the car lodged under the bus, according to a photo from Facebook user H Leo Flores, who also posted the video of the crash.
“It’s scary and it like makes you kind of queasy to watch it, to see it,” Hector Flores, the father of 5- and 8-year-olds seen in the footage, told WRAL. “The risk, the danger your children are in.”
The crash sent two kids to a hospital with minor injuries, First Sgt. S.B. Lewis of the N.C. State Highway Patrol told WPDE and WBTW.
Officials said the incident happened on N.C. Highway 72 in the Lumberton area, roughly 95 miles south of Raleigh. The bus had been serving nearby Long Branch Elementary School and was seen with its lights flashing.
In North Carolina, drivers in both directions are supposed to stop for school buses. But only people in the same direction need to do so if they’re on roads that have at least four lanes and a median or center turning lane.
The driver accused of rear-ending the stopped car received a citation for failing to reduce speed, WMBF reported.
N.C. State Highway Patrol and Facebook user H Leo Flores didn’t immediately share additional information with McClatchy News on Nov. 3.
