Two women brawling in highway ends with deputy being run down by car, NC cops say
A North Carolina sheriff’s deputy had to be hospitalized after he was run down by a car while trying to break up a fistfight in the middle of a highway, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office.
It happened late Monday, Feb. 20, when a deputy drove by the intersection of Highway 73 and Highway 16 in Denver and saw two women “fighting in the middle of the road,” officials said. Denver is about 25 miles northwest of Charlotte.
“When Deputy C. Camp arrived on the scene, one of the females got back into their vehicle and fled the scene intentionally striking Deputy Camp who was in the median,” the sheriff’s office said in a news release.
“The suspect returned back to the scene attempting to strike the officer again with the vehicle. Camp sustained severe scalp lacerations and was transported to Atrium Main in Charlotte where he was treated and released.”
Camp joined the sheriff’s office in August, officials said.
The driver has been identified as Kara Ann Johnson, 25, of Denver, the sheriff’s office said.
She was arrested in Charlotte by the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department and has been returned to Lincoln County to face a charge of attempted murder, officials said.
The sheriff’s office reports “a number of good Samaritans” stopped along the highway to help the injured deputy.
