Newlyweds bought Powerball ticket on vacation. With their win, they can take another
A newlywed couple bought a Powerball ticket during their Labor Day beach vacation on the North Carolina coast, then “didn’t think about it” the rest of the weekend.
On the drive home, they remembered their purchase and decided to check their ticket, North Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a Sept. 6 news release.
They had to pull over.
“We’re still in shock,” April Royal said.
Royal and her husband Eric won $1 million in the Sept. 2 Powerball drawing, according to North Carolina lottery officials. The prize was one of two $1 million Powerball winners nationally, and another ticket won $2 million in Minnesota, lottery officials said in a Sept. 3 news release.
“And here I am driving in all of Labor Day traffic,” Royal said.
Royal, of Fayetteville, North Carolina, bought the winning ticket in Southport and told lottery officials she and her husband got married in July. They plan to use the money on a honeymoon, in addition to investing and paying bills.
The odds of matching all five white balls are 1 in 11.6 million, according to the North Carolina Education Lottery.
Royal went to lottery headquarters in Raleigh on Sept. 5 to claim her winnings.
After taxes, Royal walked away with $712,501, officials shared.
The Powerball jackpot has grown to $461 million as of Sept. 6. The odds of winning the jackpot are 1 in 292 million, according to lottery officials.
