North Carolina

These are the top-ranked HBCUs in NC in 2023, US News and World Report says

North Carolina is home to the largest contingent of Historically Black Colleges and Universities in America, and many of them were recognized by the U.S. News and World Report Best Colleges rankings released Monday.

This year, the rankings used a revamped methodology, changing several factors, adding new factors, and increasing the emphasis on students from all socioeconomic backgrounds who earned degrees, according to U.S. News and World Report.

Changes in methodology can cause significant changes in a school’s rankings year-to-year. Here’s how HBCUs in North Carolina were ranked.

North Carolina A&T, the largest HBCU in the country with 11,833 undergraduate students, was ranked No. 1 in North Carolina and seventh among all Black colleges in America.

North Carolina Central in Durham was slotted second in state HBCU rankings and No. 11 overall, among others. Winston-Salem State was third in North Carolina and 16th for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.

Charlotte’s lone HBCU, Johnson C. Smith, was tied for 29th in this year’s rankings.
