Cities across the world are gearing up for a holiday season of special events, shows and over-the-top light displays, but one North Carolina destination has been named one of the best places in the world to spend Christmas.

Asheville, in western North Carolina, made Condé Nast Traveler’s Best Places to Spend Christmas Around the World list.

The city is a popular destination for travelers year-round, but especially during the Christmas holiday season.

“Holiday spirit is serious business in the Blue Ridge Mountains town of Asheville,” the report says. “After all, the Biltmore opened its doors on Christmas Eve in 1895 and the annual decorations include 100 Christmas trees, 25,000 ornaments, 10,000 holiday lights, and 1,200 poinsettias.”

The Biltmore, known as America’s largest home, has already transformed and been fully decorated for the holidays with special events all day long.

“By day, the elegant rooms of the house shimmer, adorned with Christmas trees, ribbons, garlands, and thousands of lights,” Biltmore’s website says. “In the evenings, the addition of flickering candlelight, cozy flames in the fireplaces, and live music invite you to imagine yourself a guest at the first Vanderbilt family Christmas in 1895.”

Condé Nast Traveler’s also recommends booking the Enchanted Christmas package at Biltmore, which includes a stay in a decorative room, plus four-course Christmas Eve and Christmas Day meals. To top it off, the report also suggested a visit to The North Carolina Arboretum’s mile-long Winter Lights experience.

The open-air walk-through light show, which will be open from Nov. 17-31, has over one million lights in and around the gardens. This year’s event will have the famously tall 50-foot lighted tree and the Quilt Garden, plus other new special details for guests visiting this holiday season.

Only a few U.S. cities were included in the list of top holiday destinations, along with New York City, Bethlehem, Pennsylvania and Park City, Utah.
