A 26-year-old man is accused in another deadly shooting while out on bond on a murder charge, North Carolina officials said.

Now, Quinton Robert Brayboy of Lumberton faces his second murder charge in less than a year. The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office didn’t list attorney information for him in a Dec. 16 news release.

“I understand due process and equal protection under the law, but our citizens and our law enforcement officers are entitled to feel safe and constitutionally protected as well,” Sheriff Burnis Wilkins wrote.

The allegations date to March, when deputies responded to a shooting that killed Coleman Fields, a 44-year-old Lumberton resident. A second person was treated for non-life-threatening injuries, officials said in a news release.

After the shootings, the sheriff’s office reported that Brayboy was arrested and “charged with second-degree murder and assault with a deadly inflicting serious injury.” He also “was taken before the magistrate and given a $100,000 secured bond.”

“To be clear, this suspect was not on pre-trial release, and there was no bond reduction in the previous case,” Wilkins wrote. “This suspect made bond the following day and has now found himself charged again with a very serious offense.”

On Dec. 14, deputies were called to the second shooting scene. Zachary Locklear, a 26-year-old Maxton resident, died after being taken to a hospital with a gunshot wound, according to officials.

In that shooting, Brayboy was charged with first-degree murder and “discharging a weapon within an enclosure to incite fear.” He was being held in jail without bond as of Dec. 16.

Deputies ask anyone with details about the latest killing to call them at 910-671-3170 or 910-671-3100.

The Robeson County Sheriff’s Office, based roughly 100 miles south of Raleigh, didn’t immediately share additional details about the cases with McClatchy News on Dec. 20.
