A lottery player thought his winning ticket was worth $1,000 — then “he kept seeing zeros,” officials said.

“I started scratching and I see zero, zero, zero, then a comma and more zeros,” jackpot winner Wonis Davis told the North Carolina Education Lottery.

Davis scored $200,000, marking the end to his recent “lucky streak.”

“I’ve had some awesome luck with scratch-offs,” Davis told lottery officials in a May 16 news release. “I actually won $500 the day before too.”

Davis’ latest win came after he went to Bunn Pit Stop in Bunn, a roughly 30-mile drive northeast from Raleigh. At the convenience store, he spent $5 on the winning ticket for the Bankroll game.

Davis, who kept $130,198 after taxes, said he hopes to put his prize money toward “business and growth.” He is from Henderson, in Vance County and a roughly 45-mile drive northeast from Raleigh.

Davis won the Bankroll game’s top prize, joining other lottery players who have been mistaken about their big wins. For example, another North Carolina man thought he scored $200 before realizing he hit the jackpot, McClatchy News reported in January.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
