Many parents want to choose a name that reflects their baby’s personality, but recent data show there’s been little change in the most popular names in North Carolina in recent years.

The Social Security Administration’s database now includes the most popular names in the state from 2023, the most recent year available.

The most widely used girls names includes the moniker of one of the state’s largest cities, and the top five boys names were used more 2,800 times last year.

Here are the most popular baby names in North Carolina and the United States and how to check any other name’s popularity:

Most popular baby names in North Carolina

Olivia took the No. 1 spot for girls names in North Carolina, according to Social Security Adminstration data, with Amelia, Charlotte, Emma and Sophia rounding out the top five.

That list is similar to the most popular names nationally, with Olivia, Emma, Charlotte, Amelia and Sophia leading the pack.

Liam was the most popular boys name in the Tar Heel State, used 715 times last year.

Noah, William, James and Oliver were the second- through fifth-place finishers in North Carolina, compared to Noah, Oliver, James and Elijah nationally.

In 2022: Olivia was also the most popular girls name in North Carolina and the U.S. in 2022, and Liam was the most popular boys name statewide and nationally last year, too.
