$1 lottery ticket turns into big win for man who just moved. ‘North Carolina is lucky’
A man moving from out of state tried his luck on a North Carolina lottery ticket — and won a huge prize.
“It’s coming at a good time,” Daniel Brose, who has spent less than a month living in his new state, told the N.C. Education Lottery.
Brose hit the jackpot after he went to a Food Lion grocery store in Advance, a roughly 20-mile drive southwest from Winston-Salem. While there, he bought his first-ever ticket for the Cash 5 drawing game.
Brose’s $1 ticket turned into a much bigger prize of $100,000. He had played the lottery in Florida and Pennsylvania but kept missing out on jackpot wins, lottery officials wrote in a July 16 news release.
“I guess North Carolina is lucky,” Brose said.
Brose, who lives in Davie County, kept $71,502 after taxes. He hopes to spend the prize money on items for his new house.
It’s not the first time a new North Carolina resident has had a big reason to celebrate. Another man moved to the state to be near his twin brother before he got richer, McClatchy News reported in December.
