A senior dog was found wandering alone — and now the rescued pup needs a new home.

“While I enjoy occasional outdoor adventures, my heart belongs indoors with a loving family,” a North Carolina animal rescue said in a Facebook post written from the perspective of Pongo the dog. “I cherish lazy days and cozy nights on soft bedding, dreaming of my forever home.”

Pongo is up for adoption after he faced uncertainty. The Triangle Beagle Rescue believes he was “abandoned as a hunting dog” before he was taken to a shelter in Bertie County, rescuers wrote in an online adoption profile and in a July 22 social media post.

Eventually the Triangle Beagle Rescue — based in the Raleigh area — took in the approximately 8-year-old pup. He was placed in a temporary home, where his foster mom noticed his unique traits.

“Pongo is not your typical barking beagle — he is quiet with a sweet, gentle nature,” the rescue wrote. “He adores people of all ages, gets along well with other dogs, and dreams of a family that shares his affection.”

The animal organization also said Pongo has become known for having a “spirit of adventure and a lifetime of love to give.” The food-loving pup is on the mend after having trouble with his balance.

“Right now he is recovering from vestibular syndrome so he looks a bit like a drunken sailor when he is tired because his balance is off,” his foster mom, Colleen Welsh-Allen, told McClatchy News in an email. “But it doesn’t seem to bother him. He’s a happy, laid back boy.”

As of July 23, Pongo was still listed among the animals available for adoption on the Triangle Beagle Rescue’s website. More details about its adoption process can be found at tribeagles.org.
