Time for a getaway? These North Carolina bed and breakfasts rank among best in US
If you’re dreaming of an ideal place for a getaway, you might not have to travel far.
That’s because North Carolina is home to two of the nation’s best bed and breakfasts, a new report finds.
But the accolades don’t end there. The state also boasts two of the top boutique hotels, offering a “customized experience and the best modern amenities and service,” according to USA Today’s 10Best. Here’s a list of the winners:
- C.W. Worth House in Wilmington at No. 4 in bed and breakfasts
- The Historic Magnolia House in Greensboro at No. 6 in bed and breakfasts
- Beaufort Hotel in Beaufort at No. 2 in boutique hotels
- The Graylyn Estate in Winston-Salem at No. 4 in boutique hotels
To create the lists, 10Best said it had editors and travel experts pick top places to stay across the country. Then, readers could vote on their favorite spots up to one time per day over the course of a month.
What makes the NC bed and breakfasts special?
In the resulting list of readers’ choice award winners, 10Best said the top-ranking bed and breakfasts offer a variety of settings that “do not disappoint.”
“If you’re looking to experience the charm and hospitality of a destination, staying at a bed-and-breakfast can be a great idea,” 10Best wrote in its Aug. 14 report. “They offer a more intimate setting, where guests can get to know the hosts as well as other travelers.”
Among North Carolina winners, the C.W. Worth House ranked the highest at No. 4. Though it fell from the No. 1 spot it held in 2023, it again was praised for offering visitors a cozy setting near popular activities, McClatchy News reported.
“The property is close enough to downtown and the Wilmington Riverwalk that you can walk to many restaurants and attractions,” 10Best wrote.
Also receiving a nod was The Historic Magnolia House, a Greensboro property steeped in history. The bed and breakfast said it was once listed in the Green Book, a guide for Black people traveling during the Jim Crow era.
“Music legends including Tina Turner, James Brown, and Ray Charles have stayed at The Historic Magnolia House, and the property’s four guest rooms feature decor inspired by past guests,” 10Best wrote about the No. 6-ranked destination.
Overall, the nation’s favorite bed and breakfast was the Winchester Inn in Ashland, Oregon, near the California border.
Though North Carolina accommodations ranked high in several 10Best categories, they were snubbed from other travel-related lists, such as the top historic and waterfront hotels. 10Best has told McClatchy News that it doesn’t reveal the number of people who vote in its contests.
