A “sweet” dog was adopted — then returned to a North Carolina shelter.

Now, more than one year later, Sasha still needs a new owner.

“He’s more than ready to find his forever home,” the Carteret County Humane Society wrote Sept. 9 on Facebook. “After waiting patiently for over a year, Sasha is eager to bring his warmth & love into a family of his own.”

Sasha has been adopted and returned several times since 2021. Most recently, an older couple took him home from the shelter. But eventually, his mom could no longer take him on walks and the owners had trouble caring for him, according to a past social media post and details shelter director Rachel Hardin told McClatchy News in a phone interview.

When Sasha came back to the shelter in June 2023, he had allergies and skin that was in “rough shape.” He later recovered as he started waiting for a home.

As the months passed, Sasha became the shelter’s longest resident. When he got breaks from shelter life, he was praised for being a “sweet, well-behaved” pup who relished in a cheeseburger snack, according to Facebook posts.

“I’ve got a heart as soft as marshmallows and a spirit as serene as a quiet lake,” the shelter said in an online adoption profile written from Sasha’s perspective. “I don’t ask for much, just a cozy corner to rest and a kind hand to pat my head. I enjoy the simple pleasures of life — a good nap, a leisurely walk, a tasty treat.”

Sasha also is described as a loving and easygoing “velcro” 6-year-old American pit bull terrier. The shelter believes he’s being overlooked due to his breed and age.

“I’ve learned to be self-sufficient, but don’t let that fool you,” the shelter wrote. “My loyalty runs deep, and once I’ve given you my trust, you’ll have a steadfast friend for life.”

As of Sept. 13, the shelter’s website listed Sasha among the dogs available for adoption. More details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at cchsshelter.com.

“Sasha has been (with) us over a year and deserves a couch to sleep on,” the shelter wrote.

The Carteret County Humane Society is in Newport, near popular beaches and a roughly 140-mile drive southeast from Raleigh.
