A three-legged dog was found in rough shape — then a family “fell in love” with her.

“After spending just a few short hours with Lola I stopped seeing all her maladies because honestly as cheesy as it sounds her inner beauty just outshined all her medical stuff,” her new owner told a North Carolina animal shelter. “She is always happy, super resilient and just ready for life each and every day.”

The family, who had been fostering Lola, decided to adopt her. Now, she’s “thriving” with her new canine siblings in her permanent home, the Forsyth Humane Society wrote in a Facebook post and an email to McClatchy News.

“We were so thrilled that Lola found her forever home with her fosters,” Malinda Massey, marketing manager for the Winston-Salem shelter, wrote in the Jan. 9 email. “She ended up right where she was supposed to be from the jump, without any of us realizing it.”

The heartwarming adoption came after Lola was rescued from Western North Carolina. Hurricane Helene battered the region with strong winds and catastrophic flooding in late September, leaving her previous shelter without the resources to care for her.

Lola was transferred to the Forsyth Humane Society, which said it received little information about her past. When she arrived in October, she had an amputated leg, “large tumor on her neck, lumps and bumps all over, and a mouth full of painful, rotten teeth,” to the surprise of her former foster mom.

Lola, described as a “sweet” 8-year-old dog, got dental work for several of her teeth. She also underwent surgeries to remove the tumor on her neck and one on her eyelid, both of which were benign.

“Of course we fell in love with Lola day one but we honestly were not looking to add another dog to our pack,” her former foster mom, identified only as Tracy, wrote. “We really were intending to simply help out and foster.”

As Lola recovered, the family couldn’t stand the thought of her transitioning to a new environment and adopted her. Over time, they’ve gotten to know all about the pup, including her love for cuddling and eating.

“Her personality is hilarious — she can be a bit aloof but she doesn’t miss a trick,” Tracy wrote. “She likes her schedule and she expects you to stick to it! And no one sleeps harder than Miss Lola — she is adorable when she sleeps!!”
