8 ‘scared and helpless’ dogs were crammed into crate and abandoned. Now, a fresh start

A family of eight dogs was left behind in a rural area — then came a fresh start.

“Crammed into a too-small crate, abandoned on a road with hardly any traffic,” a North Carolina animal shelter wrote March 17 on Facebook. “Hours passed. Maybe days, maybe longer. No one knows exactly how long they waited, scared and helpless. They held on. For each other. For a chance.”

A good Samaritan was “shocked” to find the family — a mom, dad and their six puppies — “in the middle of nowhere.” The person jumped into action to save the dogs, starting their road toward recovery.

“Now, this little family is safe in our care, getting the love and medical care they need to heal,” Brother Wolf Animal Rescue, which is based in the mountain town of Asheville, wrote in the social media post.

When the dogs arrived at the shelter, they were “dehydrated and dirty but otherwise in good health.” Now, the furry family members are scheduled to be available for adoption Friday, March 28, spokesperson Brooke Fornea told McClatchy News in an email.

The two parents — dad Banana and mom Sundae — are mixed-breed dogs. They are each about 2 years old and weigh less than 20 pounds.

Their “tiny” babies are named Sahara, Sam, Sharon, Sheila, Sierra and Susan. The little ones are roughly 2 or 3 months old.

“Banana and Sundae are both friendly, outgoing, and happy dogs,” Fornea wrote. “Banana especially loves being around other dogs. Their puppies are all full of silly, goofy, and happy personalities — just as you’d expect at their playful age!”

As the dogs wait for their next chapters, details about the shelter’s adoption process can be found at bwar.org.
