A woman just out of jail was re-arrested within minutes after she’s accused of stealing a maintenance truck — from the jail’s parking lot, according to investigators in eastern North Carolina.

It happened around 2 p.m. Tuesday, May 20, outside the Pitt County Detention Center in Greenville, about an 85-mile drive southeast from Raleigh.

“The victim was an employee of the WAC Corporation of Greenville, a landscaping contractor, who was at the jail cutting the grass,” the Pitt County Sheriff’s Office said in a May 20 news release.

“The employee observed a female (who had just been released from jail on bond) steal the work truck, which was towing a long utility trailer.”

A deputy on patrol spotted the truck and trailer on Memorial Drive, about 3 miles south of the jail, and activated his blue lights for a traffic stop, officials said.

“The driver failed to stop. A low speed chase ensued for about 2.8 miles, until the vehicle came to a stop on Peed Drive,” the sheriff’s office said.

The 25-year-old driver, who lives on Peed Drive, was taken back to the jail and charged with felony breaking and entering a motor vehicle, felony larceny of a motor vehicle and misdemeanor fleeing/eluding arrest with a motor vehicle, jail records show.

This time, however, she was denied bond “due to her already being out on bond,” the sheriff’s office said.

The truck and trailer were not damaged and were returned to the landscaping company, officials said.
