Lottery player spends $1 on ticket — and scores half-million dollar win in NC
A lottery player spent $1 on a ticket — and hit the jackpot in North Carolina.
The player bought a Carolina Cash 5 ticket that won the top prize in the June 17 drawing, making it worth more than a half-million dollars, the N.C. Education Lottery wrote on its website and in an email to McClatchy News.
The winning numbers: 1-14-16-21-33.
The winner scored $512,111 after playing the Cash 5 game online. While lottery officials said they can’t pinpoint where the ticket was sold, the person’s account is based in Hillsborough, a roughly 15-mile drive northwest from downtown Durham.
Cash 5 is a rolling jackpot game that offers tickets starting at $1. To score the jackpot prize, a person’s ticket must match all five of the numbers picked in a drawing, rules show.
As of about 10:30 a.m. June 18, the lucky ticket holder hadn’t claimed their prize. In North Carolina, the winners of drawing games have about six months to cash in, according to lottery officials.
