A sweet dog was “tossed out” of a car — and now, he waits for a second chance.

“Abandoned, let down, and given up on... yet he still remains hopeful,” a North Carolina animal shelter wrote July 24 in a Facebook post.

Finley needs a new owner months after he was thrown from a car in December. The driver left him in the parking lot of the Humane Society of Catawba County and “sped off without him,” the shelter told McClatchy News via email.

“He was tossed out of a vehicle onto our property, afraid and heartworm positive,” the shelter wrote. “He has been kept safe and medically cleared, but unfortunately, Finley is still waiting for that forever home.”

Finley is a “sweetheart” who “loves affection,” according to an online adoption profile. The 5-year-old pup recently participated in New Leash on Life, a program that pairs inmates with shelter animals.

“During the prison training program, he worked on socialization and made TONS of new friends,” Kaitlyn Ewing, interim social media manager, wrote in the shelter’s email. “He’s a completely different dog than the one we dropped off that day for training.”

As he learned how to be around other pups, Finley also practiced house training and commands. Though he’s nervous around strangers, it doesn’t take much time for him to become comfortable.

“Finley is bubbly, loyal, and very affectionate,” Ewing wrote. “He LOVES his people fiercely and with all his being. He’s such a happy, wiggly little dog who loves his outside playtime and stuffed toys. He’s got goofy ears that add to his charm!”

As of July 28, the mixed-breed dog was still available for adoption at the shelter in the Hickory area, a roughly 55-mile drive northwest from Charlotte. Details about the animal organization’s adoption process can be found at catawbahumane.org.
