NC highway on Hatteras reopening after flooding from Hurricane Erin

State transportation officials are allowing residents, property owners and workers to access N.C. 12 on Hatteras Island beginning at noon Saturday, and plan to open the highway to all at 5 a.m. Sunday.

NCDOT crews have been working to clear the highway since it was closed Wednesday evening after Hurricane Erin caused “severe overwash” that inundated several sections.

“N.C. 12 remains closed at the north end of Ocracoke Island between the South Dock Ferry Terminal and the National Park Service Pony pens,” NCDOT said in a news release. “Crews continue working to clear deep sand and water off that section of highway, and will reopen the road as soon as it is safe to do so.”

NCDOT did not report any long-term damage to the highway, which runs the length of the Outer Banks.
