Eight Powerball players just missed a $1.8 billion jackpot — but still have a lot to celebrate in North Carolina.

The players bought tickets that matched all but one number picked in the Sept. 6 drawing, making them worth $50,000. Since three of the winners spent an extra dollar on the Power Play option, their prizes doubled to $100,000, results show.

The winning numbers: white balls 11-23-44-61-62, with red Powerball 17.

The players are set to get richer after spending $2 to $3 on their lucky tickets. So, where were they sold? Here’s what the N.C. Education Lottery shared in an email to McClatchy News and on the social media platform X:

  • $100,000 ticket sold at a Food Lion in Angier
  • $100,000 ticket sold at Speedy Mart in Forest City
  • $100,000 ticket sold to an online player in Durham
  • $50,000 ticket sold at a Food Lion in Fayetteville
  • $50,000 ticket sold at a Circle K in Kernersville
  • $50,000 ticket sold at Foust Corner Market in Mebane
  • $50,000 ticket sold to an online player in Angier
  • $50,000 ticket sold to an online player in Raleigh

All of the players’ tickets matched four white balls and the red ball to win big. Each ticket was one number from scoring the jackpot prize, which stood at an estimated $1.79 billion, according to the Powerball website.

Though no one in North Carolina hit the jackpot, lottery players in Missouri and Texas won the top prize in the national drawing, McClatchy News reported.

As of early Sept. 8, all the big North Carolina prizes were unclaimed. In the state, lucky Powerball players have about six months to come forward, according to a lottery spokesperson.

What to know about Powerball

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
