Best pizza? Charlotte restaurant claims No. 1 spot in North Carolina, report says
Flaky crust, zesty sauce, flavorful toppings and a cheese pull worthy of your Instagram story: all hallmarks of the perfect pizza slice.
Charlotte’s own Pizza Baby knows all about impeccable pies, earning a nod from Tasting Table as the best pizza in North Carolina. The restaurant and bakery was featured among a host of other top-notch pizzerias from across the country — and it’s not the first time.
The pizzeria landed at No. 41 on the 50 Top Pizza USA 2025 list after also earning a spot on the independent pizza guide in 2024, CharlotteFive previously reported.
“Even if you have a favorite no-knead skillet pizza recipe, there’s just something about a perfectly-cooked pizza from your favorite pizza place,” Tasting Table’s editors wrote. “We wanted to know where you can get the best pizza in each state, so we did some digging.”
The food and dining website highlights all things restaurants, reviews and cooking.
Pizza Baby Charlotte: ‘A beloved, go-to pizza place’
“Customers were quick to point out that this is a beloved, go-to pizza place,” Tasting Table editors said in the report, published Oct. 3.
“Lauded as a friendly neighborhood spot with Roman-style and rosemary chicken pies, we’re giving it the nod as the best in the state,” the outlet added, noting the pizzeria’s two convenient locations.
Owned by Chef Trey Wilson and Steven De Falco, Pizza Baby takes pride in its scratch-made breads and locally sourced ingredients, according to the pizzeria’s website. Food should be an experience, the duo said, and it’s why they prioritize “health, quality and community in everything we do.”
For its report, Tasting Table said it looked for pizzerias that came highly-rated and recommended by customers. Pizza Baby East boasted 4.5 out of 5 stars on Yelp, while Pizza Baby West had an equally impressive four-star rating as of Oct. 6.
Spots that earned recognition from prestigious organizations (think the Michelin Guide) were also reviewed.
Creativity in toppings was also considered, as were restaurants with “a commitment to local sourcing, establishments with chefs and founders who studied with Italian masters” and overall longevity, Tasting Table said.
Local love for Pizza Baby
Wilson and De Falco tried “nearly 30 varieties of dough” before Pizza Baby opened its doors in 2023, CharlotteFive reported. Now, it’s a neighborhood staple.
“Many thanks to our amazing guests, our team, and the Tasting Table staff/writers for the tremendous recognition!” the restaurant wrote in a recent Instagram post.
Pizza lovers will find classic margherita and blanco slices, alongside more bold offerings like the toppings-heavy “90’s Supreme” and “Tarfuto” — made with truffle cream, mushrooms, pine nuts and fresh black truffles.
Garlic knots are also on the menu, as are Caesar salads and meatball sandwiches on a fresh-baked bread.
