Huge Powerball win leaves woman crying on porch in North Carolina. ‘Such a gift’

A woman was left “flipping out” after learning of her big Powerball win, North Carolina officials said.

Deborah Gates bought the lucky $3 ticket at a MAPCO service station in Waynesville, McClatchy News reported.

She had no idea she’d land a $100,000 prize, according to an Oct. 9 news release by the North Carolina Lottery.

“I went out on the porch and cried,” she said to officials. “Then I started flipping out.”

After checking her ticket, Gates couldn’t believe what she saw, lottery officials said.

“I looked and I looked but the brain was trying to deny what I was looking at,” Gates told officials.

Gates matched the four white balls and the red Powerball, which landed her $50,000. But because she bought a ticket with the Power Play, her prize doubled when the 2X multiplier hit, officials said.

After federal and state tax, Gates left lottery headquarters with $71,751, which she called “such a gift,” officials said.

“This is huge for me and it comes at the perfect time,” Gates said. “Now I can start looking for a house.”

Waynesville is about a 30-mile drive west from Asheville.

What to know about Powerball

To score the jackpot in the Powerball, a player must match all five white balls and the red Powerball.

The odds of scoring the jackpot prize are 1 in 292,201,338.

Tickets can be bought on the day of the drawing, but sales times and price vary by state.

Drawings are broadcast Saturdays, Mondays and Wednesdays at 10:59 p.m. ET and can be streamed online.

Powerball is played in 45 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
