A dog found as a stray was “timid” — until he erupted with joy at a North Carolina shelter.

Archie jumped on his owner and showered him with kisses as the pair celebrated their long-awaited reunion, video shows.

“Our Animal Control officers recently picked up Archie as a stray and his microchip led us back to his original owner — who had been searching for him all this time,” Guilford County Animal Services wrote Oct. 4 in a Facebook post. “After 2 years apart, these two are finally back together.”

Microchips are devices that store pet owners’ contact information. So, Animal Services was able to reach out to Archie’s original family after he was found roaming a Greensboro-area neighborhood, the shelter told McClatchy News via text message.

The heartwarming reunion came two years after previous owner Rich Hardy last saw Archie. The dog went missing after transitioning to another home.

“I was hopeful that I would see him again,” Hardy wrote in an email to McClatchy News. “He escaped and luckily his microchip was able to reconnect us again.”

Now, Animal Services is urging people to get microchips in case their furry friends become lost and end up in shelters. Archie, who had become known for being “timid but friendly,” showed his excitement when he got to see a familiar face again.

“Archie is doing well and adjusting nicely,” Hardy wrote. “He gets (his) daily walks and treats.”
