Son rushes to screaming mom and learns she won big NC lottery prize. ‘No wonder’

As a North Carolina woman sat in the comfort of her home, she played a lottery game.

Santana McCoy, of Engelhard, played $5 on the digital instant game Bison Bonanza, North Carolina Education Lottery officials said in an Oct. 15 news release.

“That’s my favorite game,” McCoy said in the release. “It’s always the first game I play.”

Suddenly, she hit the $219,685 jackpot, lottery officials said.

“I thought it was a dream,” McCoy said.

However, then the win settled and reality set in, lottery officials said.

“I jumped up and hollered,” McCoy told lottery officials. “My son came running.”

McCoy said when she showed her son and family her jackpot win, “They said, ‘No wonder you are yelling.’”

After tax, lottery officials said the woman took home $157,626.

“The first thing I’m going to do is fix up my house,” McCoy told lottery officials.

Then, lottery officials said, “she also plans to buy a car for her and her son and save the rest of her winnings ‘for a rainy day.’”

Bison Bonanza, which “features a progressive jackpot that can be won any time,” has a 1 in 6.2 million odds of winning.

Many people can gamble or play games of chance without harm. However, for some, gambling is an addiction that can ruin lives and families.

If you or a loved one shows signs of gambling addiction, you can seek help by calling the national gambling hotline at 1-800-522-4700 or visiting the National Council on Problem Gambling website.
