President Donald Trump issued an executive order on Thursday, Dec. 18, giving federal employees two additional paid holidays around Christmastime.

There are around 83,000 federal workers in North Carolina, The News & Observer previously reported.

The move comes after a tumultuous government shutdown this fall, which lasted 43 days (the longest in United States history) and spurred federal layoffs and significantly delayed paychecks.

New holidays for federal employees

Trump’s executive order lets federal employees receive Wednesday, Dec. 24 and Friday, Dec. 26 as paid holidays. These dates are in addition to the Christmas holiday on Thursday, Dec. 25.

Most federal employees will get the day off, though some cannot be excused for reasons of national security, defense or other public need, according to a memo from the United States Office of Personnel Management.

During Trump’s first term in office, he also gave federal workers Christmas Eve off in 2019 and 2020. Last year, Former President Joe Biden also gave federal workers Christmas Eve off.

New Year’s Day (Thursday, Jan. 1) will be the next federal holiday.
