One person was burned when a fire broke out at the Biltmore Estate’s winery, according to fire investigators in western North Carolina.

The “working fire” was reported around 11:22 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 30, at 8,000-acre estate, the Asheville Fire Department reported in a news release.

“When units arrived on scene at approximately 11:42 a.m., they found a transformer on fire inside the Biltmore Estate winery,” fire officials said.

“The fire was quickly extinguished with dry chemicals. Crews remained on the scene working to secure utilities and stop sprinkler flow. EMS evaluated one person suffering from burns to their hands.”

That person was not transported to a hospital, officials said. Investigators did not report if the person was a staff member or patron of the estate, which is open to the public for tours.

Biltmore Winery is housed in a converted dairy barn that was original to the estate. The facility crafts more than 150,000 cases of wine annually using grapes grown on the property, the estate reports.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

Biltmore Estate is about a 120-mile drive northwest from uptown Charlotte.
