Baffling explosive sounds investigated in Union County. ‘Shook our whole house’
Mysterious explosions are being heard at all hours just east of Charlotte in Union County, and the sheriff there is searching for a source.
“Is anyone else wondering what those loud noises are that have been rattling windows and being heard halfway across the county? Don’t worry it’s not just you. We’re wondering too,” the Union County Sheriff’s Office wrote in a Facebook post.
“Over the past few days, deputies have canvassed numerous areas trying to track down what many residents are describing as an ‘explosion.’ So far, we’ve found no injuries, no property damage, and no missing buildings which is good news, but it also means the mystery continues.”
The Facebook had more than 600 reactions and comments within an hour, including people who said they heard the noises late into the night. Some believed it was thunder, others suggested a construction project, and still others thought it was the sonic boom of a jet.
“Heard it 2 nights in a row,” Roody Station posted on Facebook.
“Shook our whole house and sounded like something exploded. My husband thought a transformer went out,” Hanah Helms wrote on the sheriff’s department’s Facebook page.
“Thought I was losing my mind last night. ... Went outside front and back but didn’t see or hear anything,” Lisa Swayze posted.
Anyone with “video of a flash” or other clues to help pinpoint a location is asked to contact the Union County Sheriff’s Office at 704-283-3768 or County Communications at 704-289-1591.
“Help us crack the case so we can all stop jumping every time the windows shake,” the sheriff’s office added.
