Crash on interstate blocks traffic heading to Columbia during morning commute

Drivers making the morning commute to Columbia faced delays following a collision that blocked traffic on a major interstate.

A crash occurred shortly after 7:30 a.m. on Interstate 20, the South Carolina Department of Transportation said on Twitter.

SCDOT reported the wreck resulted in a westbound lane being closed near Exit 80, the Clemson Road Exit.

That resulted in all of the westbound lanes of I-20 getting backed up, and traffic cameras showed the highway looked more like a parking lot with bumper-to-bumper traffic heading from northeast Richland County blocked.

Information on the number of vehicles involved in the collision was not available.

No injuries were reported by the South Carolina Department of Public Safety.

Shortly after 8 a.m. another collision was reported in that area on Clemson road, according to the Department of Public Safety. No injuries were reported in that crash, but information if it was caused because of the backup from the initial wreck was not available.

By 8:45 a.m., SCDOT cameras showed traffic had returned to a smooth flow, and just before 9 a.m. it tweeted no lanes were closed and the highway was expected to be cleared momentarily.
