Columbia woman celebrates winning lottery jackpot by walking all night, officials say
A Columbia woman won a six-figure jackpot playing a scratch-off game and celebrated by going for a long walk, the South Carolina Education Lottery said.
After buying the lottery ticket at the Kangaroo Express gas station and convenience store on Elmwood Avenue, the woman discovered she won $125,000, lottery officials said in a news release.
“I scratched off the ticket and noticed I won,” the woman said in the release. “In shock, I immediately handed it to my son for safe keeping. Then I stayed up all night walking around in disbelief.”
The woman was not publicly identified because South Carolina is one of just a few states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.
The woman has not said how she plans to spend her six-digit windfall.
Her jackpot came after buying a $5 instant ticket Super Tripler Win game, lottery officials said.
She overcame 1-in-660,000 odds to capture the prize, and one $125,000 jackpot in that game remains unclaimed, according to the release.
For selling the winning ticket, the Kangaroo Express store received a commission of $1,250, according to the SC Lottery.
The gas station is located near the intersection of Elmwood and Assembly Street, close to a McDonald’s and a U-Haul Moving & Storage center.
