Not a dream: SC woman wakes up remembering her lottery ticket. It was worth $1 million
What started out as an average night for a woman in South Carolina took a drastic turn around 4 a.m.
She became an overnight millionaire, officials said.
The Florence woman — who is not named — fell asleep on the couch during a movie, according to the S.C. Education Lottery.
When she woke up in the middle of the night, officials said she remembered buying the lottery ticket and scratched it off.
“I woke up the whole house,” she said, according to a release from the lottery. “I was screaming.”
The chances of her winning were 1 in 1.72 million, officials said.
The woman was playing the Millionaire Series game, a $10 instant game with prizes as low as $10 and as high as $1 million. Only three tickets in the series — which started Aug. 27 and finishes April 29 — contained the top prize.
She was the last top prize winner, officials said. But one $10,000 prize and several $1,000 prizes remain.
The convenience store where she bought the ticket also received a $10,000 commission for selling it.
With her prize money, the woman told officials she plans to buy a house.
“I’ve already started looking,” she said.
