After playing same lottery numbers for decades Midlands man wins six-figure jackpot

A Midlands man has been playing the same numbers in the lottery for decades, and his persistence finally paid off.

Using his same lucky numbers the Newberry man won the $100,000 top prize in Saturday’s Palmetto Cash 5 drawing, South Carolina Education Lottery officials said in a news release.

The man said he has played 3, 11, 19, 27, and 35 for 15 years, which just happened to be the numbers that were drawn, according to the release.

The numbers all have some meaning to the Newberry man, who bought his winning ticket at Dorrohs Grocery in Silverstreet. He told S.C. Lottery officials some are based off family birthdays, while others are just numbers he likes.

The man was not publicly identified because South Carolina is one of just a few states — along with Delaware, Kansas, Georgia, Maryland, North Dakota, Ohio and Texas — that allows lottery winners to remain anonymous.

When the Midlands man collected his winnings in Columbia, he said he’s going to keep using the same numbers. It’s hard to dispute that they really are lucky, as officials said he overcame 1-in-501,942 odds to hit the jackpot.

“I’ve been playing those numbers this long, so I’m not going to stop now,” he said in the release.

The Newberry man is not the only person in the Midlands to purchase a six-digit winning ticket.

The winner of Tuesday night’s Palmetto Cash 5 drawing bought the $200,000-winning ticket in Camden, according to S.C. Lottery officials.

“Check your tickets,” was advice from lottery officials, who said the winner has 180 days to claim the prize.

The ticket sold at Gate Petroleum was double the value of the Newberry man’s prize because the winner spent an extra $1 on the “Power-Up” option, according to the release.

The winning numbers were 23, 26, 31, 35, 38, and 2 — as the “Power-Up,” S.C. Lottery officials said.

To capture that top prize, the winner overcame 1-in-1,003,884 odds, according to the release.
